“The challenges we’re facing in 2022 are, at their root, the same that we’ve faced since the founding of the U.S. food system: 1. the mentality that puts profits over people and the planet, and 2. white supremacy and the historical and current legacy of racism…In 2022, more than ever, we’ll need sustained effort to make real changes in the fight for safe and dignified working conditions and for decentralized food systems that enable Black, Indigenous, and other communities of color to thrive.” —Navina Khanna, Executive Director, HEAL Food Alliance

"Redlining and racial covenants are just two examples of racially exclusive housing policies. Policies like these helped to create and preserve exclusive white neighborhoods in prime areas, where residents enjoyed fair mortgages. These policies also concentrated people of color into undesirable housing, often near noxious industry and infrastructure, and created legal barriers to home ownership. Despite the Fair Housing Act in 1968 prohibiting such practices, the legacy of racially exclusive housing continues to disproportionately affect the health, wealth, and well-being of communities of color today." —Cameron Denney, Research Analyst

"In mutual-aid systems, people work cooperatively to meet the needs of everyone in the community. It’s different from charity, which features a one-way relationship between an organization and recipients, and often responds to the effects of inequality but not its causes." —Amanda Arnold
