Why Forest Farm?

We believe that our work must be informed by the root causes of food insecurity. Forest Farm understands that disparities in food access are inseparable from historical and ongoing discriminatory practices that have created unequal access to housing, income, healthcare, and education, especially for Brown, Black, Native, people of color, and queer communities in Oakland and the Bay Area.

1 in 4 kids in Oakland and the Bay Area, are currently affected by hunger and food insecurity.

White people are less likely to experience hunger in Alameda County. Food insecurity also tends to be lower in neighborhoods with high home ownership and low rental burden.

"Charity-based funding that doesn’t give money directly to communities just gives the power of choice to organizations and food banks. Giving excess food from Big Ag corporations doesn’t address the root issue. People facing these issues should be the ones making decisions about what they do with resources and what kind of food they want."
